Thanksgiving Point Fireworks

So here in Utah we celebrated the 4th of July on the 3rd of July because the 4th fell on a Sunday. So we saw fireworks a day earlier then most everyone else. My girlfriend Kari and I decided to go the the free show at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. As you can see its pretty popular. Also as you can see by the photos I went there more to just hang out and enjoy the fireworks than to make photos. I figure the guy that lives on the 10th floor across from the Eiffel Tower has me beat hands down when it comes to amazing firework shots. So anyhow here are some photos I took while we were there waiting, watching and leaving.

Photo of Kari and me amongst the waves of people.

Not to shabby for a MySpace photo.

Cute shot of Kari in her extremely blindingly bright blanket.

Another shot of Kari. As you can see it was so cold she lost her hands to frost bite ;)

The firework shot of the day.

You guys have already seen this one in the previous post. Great shot for being taken the way it was.

I love this shot! Cranked my ISO to 4,000 and used the car light for my lighting.

Thanks for reading! GT

Don’t Delete Just Yet

This blog post is all about not getting to trigger happy with that delete button on the back of you camera. This photograph was taken the other day after Kari and I went to watch fireworks at Thanksgiving Point. The other photos from this event will be up tomorrow when I go through them all.

Anyways back on subject. Don’t discard any images on the spot, unless its blurry or poor composition. Why? Because you could get a cool shot like this one. What was technically wrong with this shot? It was pretty darn underexposed. I didn’t pop the flash bright enough to properly illuminate Kari. But to my defense we were rushing to the car to beat traffic home (which we failed at anyways). I just happend to have my camera around my neck and flash mounted. I forgot I left my flash on manual mode to the previous setting of to underexposed to light this photograph properly. So this photo was taken from the hip while carrying a tripod and numerous other object while walking backwards. If I wasn’t in such a rush I would have more than likely deleted this photo without a second thought because it was so underexposed.

But lucky for me I didn’t, and because I shot it in raw I was able to pull all this detail out. I didn’t even know there was smoke from the fireworks in the photo until I brightened it up.  And because it was so underexposed I introduced a lot of noise to the image when brightening it. But I like the look of the noise in this black and white photo. A keeper for sure!

Here is a detail shot where you can see the noise and Kari’s pretty face.

Bryan & Vanessa Maternity Photos

Today I had the pleasure of photographing Bryan and Vanessa Larsen’s maternity photos. We decided on going up American Fork canyon to do so, it was beautiful up there. Here are six photos of the many we made that I really liked.

Self-Portrait Day 25|365

Today is our last day in St. George but before we left I wanted to check out the St. George skatepark. Or as they call it the SK8 George skatepark (insert laugh here). The last time I skated that park was back in the day with my buddy Skyler and the whole time we were there it rained, so it was nice to have the dry concrete. I knew before even setting up the shot that I wanted to shoot it with my fisheye lens on a quarter pipe. Just so I could get that cool distortion you get with those lenses. So lucky for me I found a quarter pipe that I could put my sun to my back and some flashes in front to fill in the shadows. My dad was a real trooper with this shot, he laid on the ground with the camera for a good 30 photos (thank you dad).

Trigger man: JR Thompson

Strobist: One SB600 to camera right. Another SB800 on camera for fill.

Camera info: Nikon D700 | 16mm ƒ/2.8 Fisheye | ƒ/14 | 1/250th | Triggered with CS.

Self-Portrait Day 19|365

www.gagethompson.com-1

Today, my grandma Fraughton was having trouble getting her portable DVD players audio to work. Turns out the speakers were blown and they were no good anymore. The only way that ties into this photo is that being down at my grandmas gave me the idea to do a cowboy shot with this cool barn on her property. Fraughton’s and cowboys have always gone hand and hand. So I guess you could say this is a photograph of my inner Fraughton. Also a little funny note, the belt buckle I’m wearing is a skateboarding buckle. But it sure played well in this photo.

Trigger man: Myself

Strobist: One SB600 with shoot though umbrella to camera left.

Camera info: Nikon D700 | 50mm ƒ/1.4G | ƒ/5.6 | 1/200th | Triggered with Nikon’s CLS.
