Self-Portrait Day 31|365 Getting Ready

The locker room, this is my fourth photo into my series of working on the mountain. Here is the place that I go every morning to suit up and get ready to head up on the mountain. I can’t think of any other place that is as hot or as smelly as this locker room. As you can see I started to sweat just taking this photo after being done with work for the day. It was a pretty interesting photo to light because of the space and the idea I had. But it came out great!

Self-Portrait Day 27|365 My Studio

I’m super stoked I finally went out and bought a roll of seamless black paper. I have been wanting to do this for a long time and I’m glad I did. Instead of having the typical lightstands hold up my background I went to my local home depot and bought a couple of wall hooks for a closet pole. Then I also grabbed a ten foot dowel and mounted all that to my wall and it works fantastically.

So with this image I really wanted to show off my new background paper and my studio space. As you can see there isn’t much space the ceiling is only six and a half feet high. I believe the length and width is about 12′ x 12′ so it may look a little longer because I’m zoomed out to 18mm but don’t be fooled this is a very small room for a studio. It does a great job for head shots or half-length photos, anything past that the room becomes way to small to work in. But its still a little slice of photography heaven for me. As for the lights in this photo I not only wanted to light up the room for the photograph itself, but I also wanted to show off my lighting gear as well.

Trigger man: Myself

Strobist: One SB600 acting as background light, but really lighting me. The other two flashes are just for show.

Self-Portrait Day 6|365

No, this photo doesn’t have anything to do with my day today. The reason I made this photo is because when I was younger we would always lock each other in the hot sauna and the idea made me laugh so I decided to recreate it in a photo. I did many facial expressions some surprised, angry, and shocked. I think this one falls between surprised and shocked. Surprised because you should have seen this coming and shocked because you didn’t. I also believe there is a little sad in there because you know your stuck in that baking sauna for another good 50 minutes.

Now your probably wondering what I really did today well making this photo was pretty much it. Other than creating this photo I went shopping at wal-mart for some hitch pins for my Reuben Krabbe lazy leg light stands which I’ll blog later of course. Returned a red box and chilled with my girlfriend while assembling this photo. Hope you enjoyed it!

Trigger woman: Judy Thompson

Strobist: One SB600 with umbrella to camera left for some soft directional light also adding some fill. One SB800 with grid from directly above to light me.

Camera info: Nikon D700 | 50mm f/1.4G | f6.3 | 1/6th | Triggered with CS.
