Three Monopods Under Five Bucks

In this post I’m going to show you how to make 3 very simple monopods for under 5 bucks!
Now keep in mind a tripod would give much better results than a monopod anyday. But if your in a fix or just want to pack light you can get some sharp photos using really low shutter speeds with these tools.

The first of which is the string monopod. I got this idea from Jon Adams and he got it from Chuvak1 on YouTube to view click (here). Its simple to make, just get a string that wont stretch cut it to be roughly your height, a washer, and a 1/4″ in diameter bolt (the exact bolt I got was a carriage bolt 1/4″ in diameter and 1″ long).

Then tie one end of the string to the washer, I just did a simple granny knot for that. Then take the other end of the string and attach it to the bolt, I used a lashing so it would look nice.

What the knots look like.

Look how compact!

While I was at home depot I saw these other 1/4″ bolts and I got thinking “hey these would make some great mini monopods!” and guess what they do! Just pick out a size you would like the ones I saw ranged from 1″ long to 6″ long. (I decided on getting the 3″ and the 6″ as your see below)

The 3″ and 6″ carriage bolts

I did the lashings on these as well, so they would look nice. But lucky me it did more than just make them look nice. It also made them thicker so when I put on the two 1/8″ nuts (I think) on they fit pretty tight, I even had to screw them on.

Then I found some 5/8″ rubber caps that are normally for chairs that fit over the bottom of the bolts and nuts perfectly. Now they wont scratch my car if I decided to use it on the hood or something.

First 16×20 Print

This is the first time printing something bigger than 11×14 for me so I thought it should be documented. The print is from Melinda’s bridal photoshoot just a few days ago. We selected an image from the shoot and printed it out 16×20 for the wedding reception. It turned out really nice, super sharp. The place that printed my image so nicely is Cory Adams Photography they do a awesome job! Jon there had this photo printed for me within thirty minuets of me sending him the file. As for the frame I just picked it up at Roberts Craft. Anyways I hope to print something much bigger very soon.

Melinda’s Bridals

My brother Chase recently got married, and before the wedding I had the honor of photographing his lovely bride to be Melinda Keng. All the photographs you see below were taken at Thanksgiving Point Gardens a very beautiful place to take pictures. When we got there it was just beautiful not to cold not to hot and perfect soft light from the overcast sky. Even tho we had the over cast sky I still wanted to get some more directional soft light on Melinda.

So I brought my SB-600 and a shoot through umbrella and just had my val (voice automated lightstand) which was my father JR hold the light where ever I needed it as your see in the first picture below. That is how 99% of my photos were taken. So have a look and please leave a comment when your done.

The Mushroom and the Shoes

I took a picture of this mushroom the other day and I also got some new shoes that same day. Thus the random title for this blog post.

The mushroom was actually shot in my girlfriends back yard. Here mom found it while gardening and thought I might want to get a picture. To tell the truth I didn’t know if I wanted a picture of a mushroom I mean how do you make a growth of fungus look beautiful? Well just shoot an off camera flash from above and underexpose the background. It does a pretty good job as you can see below.
